Choosing the Right Firewood for Summer Campfires
Nothing beats a summer night around the campfire, but the type of wood you burn can make a big difference in heat, smoke, sparks, and overall experience.
Poplar
Poplar is easy to light and burns quickly, making it decent for starting fires or short evening burns. It produces lower heat and can create more smoke if not fully seasoned. It’s not known for heavy sparks, which makes it a safer option around tents and campsites.
Pine & Spruce
Softwoods like pine and spruce ignite fast and give off that classic campfire smell. They’re great for getting a fire going quickly but tend to burn hot and fast. These woods can pop and throw sparks because of their resin content, so they’re best used carefully, especially in dry summer conditions.
Tamarack
Tamarack is often considered one of the best all-around campfire woods. It burns hotter and longer than most softwoods while producing less smoke. It gives a clean burn with moderate sparking and is excellent for both warmth and cooking fires.
Birch
Birch is premium firewood for many campers. It burns hot, provides strong coals, and creates less smoke when dry. Birch bark lights easily even in damp conditions, making it perfect for summer camping. It can spark slightly, but generally offers one of the cleanest and most enjoyable fires.
For the best summer campfire, many people mix softwoods for easy starting and hardwoods like birch for lasting heat and cleaner burning.
